United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

Single Delegate

UNFCCC

In 1992; the Earth Summit brought 154 UN Member states together in Rio de Janeiro with the collective goal of combatting "dangerous human interference with the climate system". By 1994, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) had entered into force, with the treaty reaching 198 parties by 2022 and birthing 2 new protocols. This year, it's supreme decision making body - the Conference of Parties (CoP) convenes back in Brazil. Faced with decreasing appetite for climate diplomacy and sustainable development: the council will have to fight hard before the inexorable march of climate change trammels us all.

Climate Change and International Law

The world stands at a climate breaking point. As of 2021, only one country is on track with the Paris Agreement. The world will severely surpass temperature increase limit targets. Were the laws governing nations and treaties founded upon common goals all for nothing?

Alas, only you, the delegates of the UNFCCC, have the opportunity of reforging the world in the face of the impending climate crisis. Only through successfully maneuvering treaties, closing loopholes, and mandating action, may our Planet Earth remain unfettered by our own making.

Today, where the Conference of Parties begins in Brazil, you must tackle the grey question of International Law in the face of climate change, to combat the rapidly evolving situation in our oil-and-gas stricken world.

What shall the world do about sinking states? How should international law bring justice upon those who do not care for our planet? How will the world protect those who suffer the consequences? The decision is up to you.

Delegates, are you ready to fight for the future of planet Earth?
